Plan your internet connection for China
Choose a connection plan for a phone-only trip, a laptop, or hotel Wi-Fi, and know where a VPN fits.
By China Online Ready · Updated
Start with how you’ll get online when you leave the airport. A SIM, eSIM, or roaming plan supplies mobile data. A VPN runs over a connection you already have; buying one does not give your phone mobile data.
If you’re bringing only a phone
Open your existing carrier’s China roaming offer first. Record the charge for your full trip, included data, and what happens when that allowance runs out. You now have something concrete to compare with a travel SIM or eSIM.
If the roaming offer does not fit your budget or data needs, compare travel plans for your exact phone model. Check the phone’s purchase region and lock status before buying an eSIM. Keep the installation instructions and the rule that starts the plan’s validity period.
Your decision: choose the mobile plan that meets your device, dates, and data needs. Before adding a VPN subscription, identify the apps you need and confirm whether the selected mobile plan supports that use. A label such as “China eSIM” does not by itself answer that question.
If you’re bringing a laptop too
Decide whether your laptop will use your phone’s hotspot, accommodation Wi-Fi, or both.
| Laptop connection | What to establish before departure |
|---|---|
| Phone hotspot | Your mobile plan permits tethering and provides enough hotspot data for your intended use. |
| Accommodation Wi-Fi | Your property offers it, where it is available, and how you sign in. Ask about your actual room or workspace. |
| Employer’s systems | Your IT team has supplied or approved the required remote-access setup. |
For hotspot use, practice connecting the laptop to your phone now. This checks that you know the steps; the travel plan’s own tethering rules still apply when you use it.
Your decision: record the connection your laptop will use and any separate client it needs. If you are considering WannaFlix, our buying guide lists its published clients, separate app costs to check, and refund conditions.
If you plan to rely on hotel Wi-Fi
Work through the journey before hotel check-in: contacting your pickup, finding the hotel, and showing your booking. Hotel Wi-Fi does not cover that journey.
Save your address and route offline using the pre-flight checklist. If you need live maps or messages while traveling to the hotel, arrange a mobile connection for that part of the trip.
Your decision: either your saved instructions cover the journey without internet, or you have a mobile plan ready to use. An unconfirmed expectation of airport or hotel Wi-Fi leaves that question unresolved.
Check app access separately from the data allowance
List the services you actually need, such as your work login, messaging app, or video calls. For each proposed plan, look for information about those services on that plan’s support pages. If the answer is missing, send support a specific question:
I’ll use [phone model] in [cities] on [dates]. Does [plan name] support [required app or service]? Does it allow a laptop hotspot, and is there a separate hotspot data limit?
Keep the response with your order details. A provider’s answer describes its offer; it is not an independent test of performance during your trip.
Save a short connection note
Before departure, fill in these five items and save the provider’s instructions offline:
- Mobile plan: the exact product and account used to buy it.
- Start of validity: the event that starts the paid period.
- Laptop connection: hotspot, property Wi-Fi, or neither.
- Required apps: which need additional setup and whether you have completed it.
- Support: the contact route and order reference.
Keep activation codes and subscription URLs private. Finish by opening the saved instructions with Wi-Fi and mobile data off, then restore your connections.
